Best casual fashion tips for this year

Dress codes can be a minefield so getting to know what works in each situation is imperative to avoid that last minute freak out before an event. So, if you’re looking to find out what works best in a smart casual or casual dress code situation, this is the place for you.

We’ll be giving you all the information you need to keep in mind when planning your outfits for casual occasions. The key is to keep everything as plain and simple as possible – and practicality is key.

Casual clothes guide

  • Keep it plain

Keeping it plain means no garish prints and no colours that are too vibrant for a casual occasion. You don’t want to be blinding people in a fluorescent yellow scarf at a casual event and excusing it by saying there’s no pattern.

This is particularly important for casual events that are associated with work. Depending on your industry, ostentatious outfits might be the norm. But if they aren’t, it’s best to err on the side of caution and keep things plain and simple.

A simple pattern on a shirt can work if you’re a fan. For example, a light pinstripe or a large, chequered shirt can work very nicely if the colours are more muted. But certainly, no Hawaiian shirts, we can save those for the weekends!

The same goes for jewellery, you don’t want to be flashing the bling at a casual event. Something low key always works best for a low key event. Minimize the diamonds and pearls, keep it small and simple.

  • Make sure it’s practical

When we’re creating a casual look, we’re looking for accessories that are going to be functional as well as nice to look at. So, if you’re carrying a bag, make sure it’s one that can hold the things you’re bringing such as a simple tote bag or smart backpack.

An accessory such as a watch is a great example of practical dressing. This is an item that looks great but is also useful and functional. Plus, a great watch can make any outfit stand out from the crowd.

Shoes don’t have to be full on dress shoes but they can’t be your dirtiest pair of sneakers that you’ve had for five years. Why not opt for a smart boot or smart pair of sneakers instead?

When it comes to jackets, practicality is always best. A puffer jacket works well for all casual occasions as it’s lowkey but also works in all weathers. There’s no need to feel the chill in a thin suit layer or smart coat, a puffer jacket will keep you warm and comfortable whilst still being appropriate.

  • Leave some room for fun

It’s not all boring and practical when it comes to accessorizing your casual outfit, there’s always room for a slice of fun as well. Socks are the best choice to show off your flair in a casual outfit situation.

They’re hidden from sight most of the time so you can get away with a fun colour or print. A good sock should be practical of course, to maximize comfort. However, there’s nothing wrong with adding a touch of flair to your feet at a casual event.

The same goes for ties as well. If you feel more comfortable in a shirt rather than a polo or tee, you can add some fun to your tie to chill the whole outfit out a bit more. But we do have to draw the line at novelty ties!

At the end of the day, your casual outfits have got to be taken from your wardrobe so you will know what works best. But the key takeaway is to keep things neat, clean, and tidy. And any accessory that is also practical will aways get you some bonus points! Casual dressing doesn’t need to be scary, just keep it simple.
