How to Choose the Perfect Engagement Ring

Engagement rings are a dream come true for many future brides, and it’s obvious why. The ring represents a symbol of love, devotion and lifelong commitment. They are also the most finely crafted pieces of jewelry.

Without an engagement ring, there can be no wedding proposal. Since it is so important, choosing the right engagement ring can be intimidating. But don’t worry, as choosing an engagement ring does not have to be scary if you follow a few simple guidelines.

Find a Reputable Jeweler

This is probably the most important item on this list. Finding a reputable jeweler will make this frightening task much easier since you won’t have to worry about the authenticity of the jewelry. Jewelry companies like Emerson & Farrar always sell diamonds and other gemstones that come with a certificate of authenticity issued by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or other licensed institutions.

Don’t Wait for the Last Minute

It might take a month of relentless search before you find the right custom engagement ring for your future bride. If you want to find the right design you are completely satisfied with you might have to look through several stores’ offers or wait for the jeweler to create a custom design for you. Both scenarios might take some time and you don’t want that to ruin your perfectly planned proposal.

Choosing the Right Diamond

If you are buying a diamond, you have to be familiar with the 4Cs of diamond quality. These are cut, clarity, color and carat weight and they determine the quality of a diamond. This important because knowing the difference between different levels of quality can save you a lot of money.

Not everyone knows that the brilliance and the sparkle of a diamond depend on the cut. And while we tend to think of the cut as the shape of the gemstone, in fact, it refers to its proportions, polish and symmetry.

One important thing to know about carats is that while a small difference may be difficult to spot, a difference in price between a 1.1 carat and 1.2 carat diamond can be enormous.

The same goes for the color of the diamond. According to their color, diamonds are graded on a scale from D to Z. The color of a diamond that rates as H or I is still pure white but significantly more affordable.

Finally, clarity determines the quality of the diamond. Not all diamonds are flawless and contain some imperfections nearly impossible to spot with the naked eye. Needless to say, these diamonds are also significantly less expensive.

Try on Different Rings

If you really want to surprise your future bride and not let her know that you will be getting her the ring of her dreams, you have to do some research first. Look through her jewelry collection to get an idea of the type of jewelry she enjoys, including the style and material.

Is her jewelry ornate or simple? Does she prefer gold or white gold? If you aren’t completely sure, you can always propose with a solitaire band which can be easily switched.
